The popularity of the Ostrog monastery among visitors and pilgrims from all over the world makes that holy place very crowded. Our visit will be in the morning hours when the monastery's complex is quieter, which will make our sightseeing more relaxing and enjoyable. White monastery's walls stuck in the cliff, the impressive view of Bjelopavlica valley, as well as the spirituality of this unique place, will emotionally affect you and make the beginning of the day special. The city of Niksic, the second-largest city in Montenegro, is very close to the monastery and lies on several lakes and the beginning of the Durmitor mountain massif. It has a modest city center with the lovely Trebjesa city park and the popular Krupac lake with a beach and promenade. The city is famous for the production of the popular Nikšić beer. By choosing this tour guests will have the opportunity to get acquainted with the fascinating and miraculous energy of the Monastery as well as the relaxing city of Niksic, which is surrounded by beautiful nature. Welcome:)

Monastery Ostrog

OVERVIEW, OR WHAT THIS TOUR MAKE SO SPECIAL?

It is widely believed that a visit to Ostrog Monastery should always be the first activity of the day, ideally in the morning or early afternoon. Our tour is designed to honor Ostrog in the way it deserves, allowing guests to explore its significance in detail. Most of our guides are from the region and provide excellent information about the monastery as well as insights into the lives of people in that part of Montenegro. Please note that in August, due to heavy traffic and a large number of pilgrims visiting from around the world, organizing this tour may result in significant delays. To avoid spoiling the experience of the magnificent Ostrog Monastery, we have decided to skip tours during this month.

Nikšić, located just 25 minutes from Ostrog, is a city worth visiting, even though it may not be on the official tourist map. It offers several lakes where you can take a lunch break and swim during the summer months. Our agency is the only one in Montenegro that offers tours to Nikšić, especially from Kotor and Budva, so be sure to take advantage of this unique opportunity.

WHEN AND WHERE WILL WE START?

The tour departs from Kotor at 8:00 in the morning, which is the standard time for all our trips. After a maximum of 45 minutes of driving, we will arrive in Budva, where we will pick up guests. We will arrive in Podgorica 60 minutes later, picking up the guests and continuing our journey. If guests take the private tour we will pick up them from their accommodations.

The departure point in Kotor is from the ECO petrol gas station next to the main bus station.
The departure point in Budva is from the ECO petrol gas station next to the hotel Slovenska Plaža
The departure point in Podgorica is from the INA petrol station next to the entrance of the Big Fashion Shopping Mall.

NOTE: The temperature in the summer season can be very high, above 35 degrees, so pay attention to protect your body with adequate clothes, skin with sun cream, and head with a hat. Always have enough water.

 WHERE WE WILL GO?

We will go to Ostrog Monastery and the city of Niksic

OSTROG MONASTERY (MANASTIR OSTROG)

Ostrog Monastery

Ostrog Monastery is one of the biggest attractions in Montenegro, and it is only 45 km away from the capital. It is an Orthodox monastery built in the 17th century and cut into the vertical cliffs of the Ostrog's Greda at 900 meters above sea level. The priest Vasilije Ostroski (Basil of Ostrog) built a monastery with his monks and greatly helped his people, healed the sick, and anticipated the events that would happen, so he was named the miracle man. The witnesses in the past let the testimonials that his miracles continued to happen even after his death. Today, the monastery is not only a sanctuary for Orthodox people but a sanctuary for all the people of the world who come here to pay homage to the relics of St. Basil, seeking a cure for the soul and the body.

The presentation of Mother of God Monastery Ostrog

He died in 1671, and after 7 years (1678)  he was proclaimed a Saint (St. Basil of Ostrog) because of his faith, immaculate life, goodness, and helping the people. His body is carefully guarded in the cave church, which is dedicated to the Presentation of the Mother of God. The annual celebration of St. Basil is on the 12th of May, which is also the "Slava" of the city of Nikisc. Niksic also has the biggest public church dedicated to St. Basil in Montenegro.

Monastery Ostrog upper monastery

The monastery complex consists of the lower and upper monasteries. We will visit the upper monastery where there are two churches: The presentation of Mother of God with St. Basil's coffin, and the church of the Holy Cross decorated by famous fresco painters in the 17th century. They also partially painted the rocks of Ostrog Mountain. The complex has also a dormitory, souvenir shop, confessional rooms, and other monastery rooms for monks and visitors.

Lower Monastery

After visiting the upper monastery, we will visit the lower monastery which was built in the 19th century. The lower complex makes up the church of the Holy Trinity, a monastery, and a religious school founded in the 18th century. Today, liturgies are here held regularly, as baptisms and weddings too. From the Upper to Lower Monastery is 5 km of distance by the main road but the track through the forest is a pilgrims' route and can be crossed in about 25 minutes.

NIKSIC (NIKŠIĆ)

Krupac Lake Niksic

Half an hour's drive from Ostrog Monastery is the city of Niksic. It is the largest industrial city in Montenegro thanks to the factories of iron and steel as well as bauxite mines, but it is certainly more famous thanks to the production of the popular Niksic beer. One of the most beautiful natural places near the city center (5 km away) is a very popular Krupac Lake which has been nicknamed the Niksic Sea because it has promenades, beaches, restaurants, and numerous activities on the beach and water sports. In the case of summer heat, we can spend a lunch break on this lake, where guests can take a swim.

Salt Lake in Niksic

There are many places worth seeing in the center of Niksic: the Central Square of Liberty, the Royal Palace of King Nikola I Petrović Njegos containing the museum, and the Church of St. Basil of Ostrog, which was built in the 19th century. Near the center, there is an old Turkish city wall and Hadji-Smajil's mosque. The beautiful forest park called Trebjesa is about ten minutes and a moderate walk away from the center with restaurants where guests can have lunch. Salt Lake, which is 6 km from Niksic, is an attraction that we can not visit because unlike Lake Krupac this lake has no proper access road.  After a visit to Niksic, we go back to Podgorica, Budva, and Kotor.
