About Herzegovina Tour

ABOUT HERZEGOVINA TOUR

This tour is a perfect choice for our guests who want to see Herzegovina and its world famous city Mostar with its UNESCO protected Old Bridge. We believe that this 14 hours tour can offer unforgettable memories and stir up your emotions. So if you want to do a daily trip, learn about beautiful Herzegovina its culture and try some of the traditional Herzegovina specialties, book in time your seat on this tour.

Tour starts at 8am in front of the old town in Budva, then continues to Kotor, and then we head for Trebinje. Travelling time is about 3 hours depending on the border crossing waiting time.

After crossing the border, we will drive slowly along mountain Orjen towards the river Trebišnjica, one of the longest sinking rivers in the world (96.5 km long above ground, total length 187 km). Trebinje Region is one of the seven regions of Republic of Srpska in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Its administrative center is the town of Trebinje as the southernmost municipality and town in Republic of Srpska. The town lies on the Trebišnjica River which flows further through Popovo Polje area.

After we arrive in Trebinje city center we will make a break for breakfast. Trebinje is first mentioned as Tribune in the 10th century by Constantine Porfirogenit. At the beginning of the New Ages and during the Middle Ages, Trebinje’s area was developing under the strong influence of the Byzantine Empire, and in 15th century, after long state independence, it fell under the centuries-old government administration of first the Ottoman Empire and then, until 1918, the Austro-Hungarian empire. In the middle Ages, less than 200 years, Trebinje was in the grip of Nemanjici, and then under the government administration of Tvrtko Kotromanic. From 1466 until 1878, it was in the grip of Turkish government. Trebinje’s Old Town emerged at the beginning of the 18th century on the coast of the Trebisnjica River and it was called Ban Vir. Current Old Town – Kastel emerged from the former centre of trade and craft.Center of the town is small but lively. Our guests will have an opportunity to see the old town, town’s square and park.

After our visit to Trebinje we will continue to our next destination, the town of Stolac which is one of the oldest towns in Bosnia and Herzegovina and because of its remarkable history is admitted for UNESCO World Heritage. The first settlement was Daorson (Ancient Greek Δαορσών) and was the capital of a Hellenized Illyrian tribe called the Daorsi (Latin Daorsei). The Daorsi lived in the valley of the Neretva River between 300 BC and 50 BC. Daorson was built around a central fort or acropolis, surrounded by gigantic walls made of huge stone blocks (similar to those in Mycenae, Greece).

Old Town in Stolac is named Vidoški. Many legends say that the Old Town Vidoški was built by Queen Vida who named it after herself. Vidoški is first mentioned in the XV century, as a town in the land of Herzeg Stjepan. Soon after it was taken by the Ottoman Empire, under whose rule the Old Town continued to grow.

We will also visit famous mills that have been built on the Bregava since the 15th century. In the 18th century, mills were part of the endowments of some Stolac’s best known benefactors among the families who owned flour mills. Today, mills carry the names of the families that used them just before the production in mills was discontinued. The echoing sound mills make, the deafening sound of the waterfalls, the sweet smell of the flour from mills, the lifelike colors the carpets and clothes washed in fulling mills, all created special atmosphere about Stolac. The craft of building mills was passed orally, from one generation to another. The very types of flour mills and fulling mills represent a part of the rich national heritage of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Our last destination will be world famous city of Mostar. The historic town of Mostar, spanning a deep valley of the Neretva River, developed in the 15th and 16th century as an Ottoman frontier town and during the Austro-Hungarian period in the 19th and 20th centuries. Mostar has long been known for its old Turkish houses and Old Bridge, Stari Most, after which it is named. In the 1990s conflict, however, most of the historic town and the Old Bridge, designed by the renowned architect Sinan, was destroyed. The Old Bridge was recently rebuilt and many of the edifices in the Old Town have been restored or rebuilt with the contribution of an international scientific committee established by UNESCO. The Old Bridge area, with its pre-Ottoman, eastern Ottoman, Mediterranean and western European architectural features, is an outstanding example of a multicultural urban settlement. The reconstructed Old Bridge and Old Town of Mostar is a symbol of reconciliation, international co-operation and of the coexistence of diverse cultural, ethnic and religious communities.

In Mostar we will make a lunch break and after our visit to the Old Bridge and the Old Town we will head back to Kotor and Budva.
