BUDVA-KOTOR- BOKA KOTORSKA BAY-DUBROVNIK AIRPORT & OLD TOWN

mapa_boka_kotorskePainters, poets, scientists, tourists, they all experienced the Boka Kotorska in a different way. Everybody finds motive or inspiration for oneself, experiences it as something special, unusual, prodigious. And the Boka Kotorska is, which was confirmed by signing the Kotor-Risan bay on the list of World's natural and cultural heritage of Unesco, and accepting the Bay in the Club of the most beautiful world bays.

The Boka Kotorska is full of differences: high mountains and extensive sea, continent and Mediterranean, two civilizations, east and the west. All those differences in the Boka Kotorska unify. It's easier to see that harmony of differences in the historical and cultural heritage than in nature. We can notice the presence of many civilizations, cultures, and styles – prehistoric fossils, iliric epoch, antique, prelatin, latin, gothic, renaissance, baroc.

Start in front of old town Budva. The road to Dubrovnik leads all the way along the beautiful Montenegrin -Croatian coast. Next stop is the old town of Kotor – once the most important harbor center. We pick up the guests from the hostel in Kotor and have time to walk through the old town. We drive around the famous Bay of Kotor, well known as ‘Perl of Mediterranean’.

m_Gospa_od_krpjela_1The road leads us further to Perast, also a cultural and economic centre back in the 17th century and today a museum where you can see stamp of glorious past centuries.

You can take pictures of 2 beautiful small islands, trademark of Perast: Gospa od Skrpjela (Lady of  the Rocks) and St. George, two unique tourist attractions. The islands in the summertime can be visited from almost every town in the Boka Kotorska by boat. Cost is variering depending on the length of the trip. The cheapest can be found from Perast and will cost around 2 euro a person. Keep in mind the Gospa od Skrpjela is a sacred place so properly behaviour must be used like in regular churches. But make sure you wear a shirt and don't go bare chested because you will not be allowed on the islands.

m_rimski_mozaiciWe drive further to Risan the oldest city along the banks of the Bay of Kotor and it’s clear to guess why residents picked this place to build their town in the 4th century BC.  At that time Risan was actually called Rhizon and it occupies a strategic location at the innermost point in the Bay of Kotor, and only accessible by sea if you pass several narrow straits in the bay.

Because of the Bay of Kotor’s unique geography, Risan actually adjoins the Bay of Risan, which seems like a smaller “bay within a bay”.

Now, Risan has opened its gates to modern travellers who come to marvel at her long history, soaring stone structures and Roman mosaic from 2nd c.BC. The remains of a Roman patrician's villa with mosaic floors as beautiful as those made in Roman period can be found here.

The excavation site is small and you can visit it in about 15 minutes.

Ticket to visit Roman mosaic costs 2 euros.

m_Herceg_Novi_1Next stop is Herceg Novi, the youngest city at the Adria cost and mixture of different cultures.

The sunny city of Herceg Novi is famous for its flowers and exotic plants, brought back from far-flung locations by generations of sea captains. Oleander, magnolia, honeysuckle and jasmine line the streets here; it is the botanic garden of Montenegro. Perhaps because of its beauty, Herceg Novi has become home to many Montenegrin artists, and the town has a number of galleries and hosts regular exhibitions.

Founded in 1382 and highly prized for its strategic location Herceg Novi has had a turbulent past, changing hands numerous times. The Turks, Venetians, Spanish and Austro-Hungarians have all occupied the town, leaving significant traces of their civilization. There is plenty to explore: the well-preserved Fortress Spanjola stands on a hill behind the old fortified town overlooking the bay, and nearby are the ruins of Kanli Kula - the Bloody Tower - which served as both fortress and prison. Traces of messages left by prisoners are still visible on the walls here. In August a film festival is held in the tower.

Croatian border is only short drive from Herceg Novi away.

We stop at the airport for flight tourists.

We drive further to Dubrovnik city and pass near the city walls, which is a special event.

The last station is Begović Boarding House on Lapad hill in Dubrovnk.
